8 Hanukkah Quote Ideas to Light Up Your Letter Board
Hanukkah is the Festival of Lights!
It’s perfect that this hopeful holiday falls during the darkest months of the year when we could all use a little extra light.
Most people probably know that Hanukkah is associated with menorahs and dreidels and latkes (potato pancakes), but if you don’t celebrate Hanukkah (which you may also have seen spelled Chanukah), you might not know much about this traditional Jewish holiday,, so we did a little research. Here’s some interesting history for you:
After rebelling against an anti-Jewish ruler and having success in their revolt (cheers to that!), the victorious Jewish people could only find enough pure olive oil to keep the menorah burning for one day. But then, a miracle occurred and the small amount of oil they had lasted for eight days! Ever since, Jewish communities have commemorated this provision with a special eight day celebration. It’s a time where people gather to have family dinners, play games, and exchange gifts.
While the traditions have changed over the thousands of years since it was first celebrated, the meaning remains the same. The word Hanukkah means “dedication” and the purpose of the holiday is to acknowledge the Jewish people’s dedication to their beliefs, the hardships they went through while overcoming oppression, and their ultimate victory.
If you’ve been around here for long, you know we love any reason to gather with family and friends to celebrate… and celebrating for eight days straight sounds like the perfect holiday to us!
